Established in 1922, Gilbertie’s is a 4th generation, family owned garden center that’s been a staple in Westport for close to 100 years. We provide certified organic products throughout the northeast and serve our own community by donating generously to local gardens, charities and schools. We truly believe in the power of plants, hosting free lectures and classes seeking to teach the importance of growing organically and sustainably, benefiting not only our own health, but that of the world around us.
We are the largest herb plant grower on the East Coast with expansive greenhouses and a delightful gift shop. Our grounds are surrounded by theme gardens providing an inspired experience for both the casual gardener and the serious botanist. We offer annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, tropical plants, pond supplies, fish, pottery, statuary, fall pumpkin picking and hay rides, Christmas trees, holiday décor, succulents and indoor houseplants!
Visit us Monday through Saturday from 8:30AM to 5:00PM & Sundays from 10:00AM to 4:00PM.

Top Tips for Terrific Tomatoes
Adapted from Small-Plot High-Yield Gardening by Sal Gilbertie & Larry Sheehan, Brown Books Publishing, 2022.
Want to grow the sweetest, juiciest tomatoes this season? Whether you're a first-time grower or a seasoned tomato enthusiast, these essential tips will set you up for success:
1. Start with the soil.
- Have your soil tested and/or add compost
- Replace/replenish container soil (ideally clean pots with fresh soil)
2. Choose determinate or indeterminate plants with strong stems (at this point it is too late to start from seed)
- Indeterminate tomatoes will grow as high as you can stake them
- Determinate tomatoes are more suited for containers (i.e., Patio, Celebrity Bush, Early Girl Bush)
- Reminder, you only need ONE cherry or grape tomato plant—Sun Gold is the sweetest.
3. Plant your plant as deep as possible to encourage root growth.
- Pull off lower leaves and suckers before planting.
- Continue to pull off suckers as the season progresses.
- suckers are leaves and shoots that grow at the “Y” junction of two stems.
- Place a handful of organic compost in the hole with the plant.
- Water well
4. Remember the Cardinal LAW of Gardening
- LIGHT-Plant your tomatoes in a spot where they will receive 8-12 hours of sunlight during the summer.
- AIR-leave enough space between your tomato plants—ideally 3 ft. for Indeterminate and one unglazed terracotta or wooden container at least 18”X18” (bigger is better) for each determinate plant.
- WATER—DO NOT overwater your tomatoes—this will lead to fungus, mildew, and rot.
- stick your finger well below the surface to feel if the soil is dry.
- ALWAYS water in the morning—NEVER in the evening
- ALWAYS water at the base of the plant
- NEVER use a sprinkler on your garden
5. Use organic fertilizer at planting and then once a month—more often if the season is rainy (every 2-3 weeks)
6. Chop off the top of your indeterminate tomatoes after Labor Day to encourage the plant to put its energy into ripening the tomatoes before the first frost.
